The Raitzyns
Cotton voile, rayon, leather, suede
36" x 60"
2004 / The Raitzyns were the family of my father’s mother: a well-to-do, secular Jewish family originally from Russia, who left at the time of the Russian Revolution and moved to France (and some to Belgium). Pictured are all eleven Raitzyn siblings (my grandmother is in the center, wearing a beret), along with assorted spouses and children. The white gloves indicated who survived the war, and the black gloves show who did not. You can see a grouping of three black gloves along the right side of the quilt. It corresponds to one young family—father, mother, and six-year-old daughter, all of whom were killed in Auschwitz or en route. The lower right quilt block contains a listing of those in the family who were deported: their ages, convoy numbers, and the dates they arrived at Auschwitz.
