Tamara

After emigrating to the United States as a child, my father learned English quickly; several years later, he wrote down his memories of the Nazis’ invasion of Paris and of being sent into hiding, torn from his parents. Selections from his text, as well as excerpts from my correspondence with an elderly cousin who survived the war and who knew Tamara well, combine with a period French song by Messiaen in this artists book from 1992—my attempt to reconstruct the brief life of Tamara, my grandmother.
